Concert Review – The Old Dance School

Concert Review – The Old Dance School – Lichfield Guildhall – February 24th 2013

Lichfield Guildhall provided the perfect setting for the 6th concert of The Old Dance School’s 2013 spring tour. An appreciative audience braved the February weather and were treated to an evening of duelling fiddles, soaring brass crescendos and foot-stomping grooves from the Birmingham based septet.

The Old Dance School

The Old Dance School take their name from the old Betty Fox School of Ballet in Birmingham where the band was originally formed and who have been playing together since 2006.

The show featured songs from their three widely applauded studio albums – ‘Chasing the light’, ‘Forecast’ and ‘Based on a true story’. The first set featured songs including ‘Craigie Hill’, ‘The Taxidermist’ (About a hare!), and ‘Strange Highway’ which is a song inspired by a moonlit new years eve looking down over the city of Manchester. The first set finished with a song called ‘Wen’ which started with a long instrumental including electronic loops and violin harmonies gradually building up to a crescendo of vocals and instruments to bring the first half of the evening to an end.

The second set again featured songs from the studio albums and included ‘Sula Sgier’ a protest song about the seabird hunt on the small uninhabited Scottish island. ‘From the air’, a lively instrumental, ‘The real thing’, and the technically brilliant ‘Spaghetti Panic’. The band left the stage to enthusiastic applause and cries of “more” from the audience so had little choice other than return to the stage for an encore performance of ‘The North Edge’ another song from the ‘Chasing the light’ album. A fitting end to a wonderful evening of musical entertainment.

The Old Dance School Albums

The Old Dance School have been championed by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris and they certainly left the Lichfield audience wanting more. Hopefully they will be back again soon.
