Tom Cawley ‘Curios’
(Lichfield Guildhall) Sunday 18th April

8.00pm
Tickets: £13/£12 concs/£11 members/£6 students

This group exploded onto the British jazz scene with their distinctive, almost chemical sound.

Pianist/composer Tom Cawley is joined by superb bassist Sam Burgess and young outstanding drummer Joshua Blackmore. They all work with the cream of British bands but it is their creativity and unrivalled interplay which makes them 'stand out from the crowd'. They cover the whole spectrum - at times delicate, at times wildly percussive, flashing from a whisper to a roar.

To quote one review "Never less than spellbinding -A must see trio, fantastic, fluent, romantic."

We are delighted to welcome back this wonderful performer to the Guildhall who needs little introduction to his many fans.

After over thirty years in the business his songs remain fresh and vibrant and his skill on the whistle is second to none. His humour and observations on life remain as quirky as ever.
To use one quote: “With his wealth of traditional songs, fun songs, fine musicianship, a zany and rare wit (with introductions which send his audiences 'rolling in the aisles') you have all the ingredients for the perfect recipe of success.”

Need we say more!!

Then follows the English folk legend of the early 70's - Bridget St John. She learnt to play guitar when at Sheffield university in the late 60's (with the help of the late John Martyn), and she then toured the campuses in the 70's, and even opened for Davie Bowie. She now lives in New York so take this rare chance of seeing this incredible singer/songwriter /guitarist.

Hazel O’Connor & The Bluja Project
(Lichfield Guildhall) Sunday 25th April

8.00pm
Tickets: £15/£14 concs/£13 members/£7 students

Award winning singer/songwriter HAZEL O'CONNOR teams up with legendary performers saxophonist CLARE HIRST (Bellestars, Communards, David Bowie) and pianist/vocalist SARAH FISHER (Eurythmics, Sax In The City)

To quote: “Here is a singer who is cast in the Billie Holiday-Edith Piaf mould...a powerful voice which can handle a wide range of material, and a charisma which singles her out from many other singers.”

The trio perform a mixture of O'Connor originals alongside standard classics, re-interpreted to fit the line-up of sax, piano and vocals and classics. The superb blend of the three voices adds a sweet touch of class to their vibrant performance.

Review by Sarah Crompton - Daily Telegraph

The band turned out to consist of Eighties singer Hazel O'Connor, of Breaking Glass fame, pianist Sarah Fisher and saxophonist Clare Hirst, both professional musicians with distinguished careers backing names such as the Communards, the Eurythmics and David Bowie.

The first thing to say about them was that they were absolutely fantastic, bringing the entire audience roaring to its feet with a judicious, jazzy mix of old and new, in a way which bodes well for their tour next month. But the second remarkable thing was that they were all about 50 – and it is not until you see three women of that certain age rocking out with abandon that you realise what a rare sight it is.

And from a recent performance:

The Quireboys were a hard act to follow but not for Hazel O’Connor! She put in a stunning performance at The Frazer Theatre last night! The Bluja project – Hazel with saxophonist Clare Hirst and keyboardist Sarah Fisher – played a selection from her classic Breaking Glass album along with jazz classics such as Billie Holiday’s God Bless The Child. Simply brilliant and exciting!
