Mark Jones
Operations Manager
Mark, what’s your role within Lichfield Arts, and what does it involve?
As Operations Manager at Lichfield Arts, I help bring together all parts of the organisation to ensure our events and activities offer a great experience for audiences, artists, and volunteers alike. I work closely with strand leads to keep things running smoothly—making sure our artistic quality, branding, and customer experience all align with the values and mission of Lichfield Arts. I also support the development of our strategic plans and work alongside the board of trustees to help shape priorities and guide the charity’s direction. A big part of my role is looking at how we can grow, improve, and innovate—always aiming to make the most of our resources and deliver even greater impact in the community.
What drew you to get involved with Lichfield Arts?
After several years working in large offices, I was looking for a friendlier, more community-focused environment when I moved to Lichfield from Birmingham. While between jobs, I began volunteering with Lichfield Arts and quickly found a welcoming team of like-minded people and a shared passion for the arts. That initial connection in 2014 led to a staff role, and in April 2024, I stepped into the position of Operations Manager.
What’s your background or professional experience in the arts or community work?
My professional background spans roles in both the public and charitable sectors, with a strong foundation in administration, operations, and organisational support. I previously worked as a civil servant, where I developed key skills in policy implementation, communication, and stakeholder coordination. That experience gave me a solid grounding in structure and accountability, which I’ve carried into my work at Lichfield Arts. Prior to becoming Operations Manager, I served as the organisation’s Administration Manager, supporting day-to-day operations, managing the Lichfield Arts office and helping to streamline processes behind the scenes. These varied roles have shaped my approach to working collaboratively, staying solution-focused, and helping organisations run efficiently and effectively.
What do you enjoy most about being part of Lichfield Arts?
Lichfield Arts has been a significant part of my life for over a decade, and during that time, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside an incredible team of trustees, volunteers, staff, artists, customers, and supporters. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing our events come to life—from transforming an empty venue or, in the case of our Fuse festival, an empty field, into vibrant, engaging, and safe spaces where our community can come together to experience high-quality arts. It’s always inspiring to witness the positive impact these events have on both the people involved and the wider community.
What’s something you’re proud of contributing to at Lichfield Arts?
Since 2023, Lichfield Arts has undergone significant changes. With shifts in the arts and cultural sector, alongside changing audience expectations, we’ve adapted the way our organisation is run. It’s been incredibly rewarding to have played a leading role in this transformation, particularly in areas such as our artistic programme, volunteer management, customer experience, and audience development. This process has not only taught me a great deal about myself but has also allowed me to develop new skills and knowledge. It’s been an exciting challenge to collaborate with the team, encouraging each other to achieve so much in a short space of time, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together.
What are you most excited about for the future of Lichfield Arts?
It’s exciting to see the Lichfield Arts Emerging Talent programme grow so strongly in recent months, and I’m eager to see how it continues to evolve in the future. We’re also expanding our reach through our ECCO: Explore; Create; Connect outreach programme. With activities planned in villages and smaller communities across the district between 2025 and 2027, I’m thrilled to see how this initiative will grow and positively impact local communities.
